The 2014 biographical adventure Wild definitely was not Disney fare. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon earned her second Best Actress Academy Award nomination for it.
Playing gritty protagonist Cheryl Strayed called for several nude and sex scenes. Reese Witherspoon was anything but keen to do them.
“It was really hard to do it. I didn’t want to do any of it. I really didn’t want to do the sex scenes,” she says.

Reese had shot nude scenes before, like in this hot clip from the movie Twilight. But Wild called for a whole new level of sweaty grit and bare all grime.
Witherspoon rang the woman she played before one particularly challenging scene. “I called Cheryl the day before and I was like, ‘I have to do this scene in this alley and I’m having sex with two guys,’ and I’m like, ‘Why did you do this?!'” she recalls.
Strayed stoically answered: “I’m sorry I was such a slut in the ’90s, but you’re just gonna have to do it. Otherwise people are going to say, ‘It’s just going to be a hiking movie and that’s stupid.'”
Reese doesn’t have anybody to blame but herself really. She fell in love with Strayed’s story after reading her memoir on a plane trip. And she immediately got her own production company to buy the movie rights.
She rang the author to tell her how she felt. “I think I kind of scared her. I was like ‘Hi. This is Reese Witherspoon. You don’t know me but I love you. And I feel like I went on this journey with you!'”
“And then I just told her all the reasons that I wanted to make it into a movie and why I thought it was so cinematic. And I loved that it wasn’t sentimental. It wasn’t saccharin,” she recalls.

Laura Dern also picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for playing Bobbi Grey, the mother of Reese Witherspoon’s character.
It was Bobbi’s early death from cancer which sent her daughter into depression, which she tried to numb with heroin and anonymous sex. That combination destroyed her marriage.
But her mother’s death also prompted the 1,100 mile hike of self-discovery and ultimate catharsis which is the subject of the movie.
